According to the IOOF website: This jewel may be worn by a brother and patriarch who is a Past Grand and a Past Chief Patriarch, instead of the separate PG and PCP jewel.
The back is riveted on and is a thick material to be engraved. Oddly this one is not engraved.
This one is interesting because it seems to have sat in one place in one position for a very long time. See the oxidation on the above and below pictures. Now, before you start emailing me to say that gold does not oxidize... true. But that is a property of the AU element. Any alloy has a portion of the composition made up of silver and copper. The copper does. A 18k ring which is worn will never really show any tarnish. A 10k ring buried in the back yard will quickly show tarnish. At any rate this one was twisted and stored in a way that caused the front of the medallion and the back of the pin bar to tarnish.
I plan to clean it, but I will need to do it gently. The bar at the top is certainly gold washed sterling, and I have seen this same bar on other IOOF jewels.
This jewel is 2.75" by 1.5" and weighs 10 grams. It is sterling and maybe 10k gold.
relative amount I paid for this - low
As of 2/9/14 the gold/silver scrap value works out to about $___?
However, none of these are for sale.
